Increase in Chevy Camaro thefts in Los Angeles attributed to potential involvement in street takeovers

The spike in Chevrolet Camaro thefts in Los Angeles this year has left both law enforcement and Camaro owners on high alert. According to the L.A. Times, thieves have stolen a significantly higher number of Camaros in the first few months of the year compared to the same period last year. This trend is concerning, especially since car theft is already a prevalent issue in L.A., with approximately 30,000 vehicles stolen annually.

Police suspect that thieves are using sophisticated devices to clone signals from nearby key fobs, allowing them to easily break into and steal Camaros. This method of car theft is not new, but advancements in technology may have made these devices more accessible to a younger crowd, leading to an uptick in Camaro thefts.

Interestingly, law enforcement believes that the rise in Camaro thefts is linked to the growing popularity of “sideshows” or illegal street racing events. Participants in these events are increasingly opting for Chevy products like the Camaro. In response to this trend, authorities have implemented stricter penalties for owners and vehicles involved in sideshows, including vehicle seizure and destruction.

To protect their Camaros from theft, owners are advised to secure their key fobs in a signal-blocking holder, such as a tin can or aluminum foil. Additionally, it is crucial to never leave the key inside the vehicle or leave the vehicle running while unattended. By taking these precautions, Camaro owners can decrease the risk of falling victim to car theft and help combat the rising trend of Camaro thefts in Los Angeles.
