The Next-Generation Nissan Leaf Expected to Debut in 2026 Model Year

During the Chicago Auto Show, we had the opportunity to sit down with Trisha Jung, Nissan’s senior director for EV Strategy and Transformation, to discuss the future of electric vehicles. From our conversation, it became apparent that Nissan is preparing to release the next-generation Nissan Leaf for the 2026 model year. While automakers frequently decline to comment on future products, Jung confirmed that the current iteration of the Nissan Leaf will continue through the 2025 model year, with plans for another generation beyond that.

Furthermore, Nissan’s European branch has hinted at future EV models, including the Qashqai, Juke, and Leaf, drawing design inspiration from recent concept cars such as the Hyper Urban, Hyper Punk, and Chill-Out. Although specific details were not provided, the similarities between these models and the concepts suggest that the Leaf will be based on the Chill-Out concept.

The Chill-Out concept, which shares a platform with the Ariya, showcased design elements that align with the SUV’s aesthetic and a crossover shape suitable for the market. It is anticipated that the next-generation Leaf will be unveiled in the next year or two, slated for release as a 2026 model. If it shares the Ariya’s platform, the new Leaf could potentially offer dual motors, all-wheel drive, and NACS charging, aligning with Nissan’s decision to incorporate the plug standard starting the following year. It is also speculated that production may continue in Tennessee, a strategic move to maintain tax credit eligibility.

The information shared by Jung, combined with the insights gleaned from the European branch’s design cues, underscores Nissan’s commitment to the future of electric vehicles and strengthens anticipation for the release of the next-generation Leaf. Stay tuned for further updates as Nissan’s plans continue to take shape.
