The Luxurious and Practical 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class: A Surprisingly Athletic Review

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has long been known for its sharp handling, luxurious interior, and powerful engine. Despite its impressive features, the GLC-Class has its drawbacks, including a relatively busy ride, annoying touch controls, tight front seating, and the lack of a plug-in hybrid model.

The second-generation GLC-Class, introduced last year for the SUV and this year for the Coupe model, continues to build on the strengths of its predecessor, offering a refined driving experience and a beautiful interior. The key upgrade in this new edition is a much larger and more useful cargo area, along with the latest Benz infotainment tech. However, while the GLC-Class remains a top performer and is certainly worth checking out, competitors have managed to catch up and edge ahead in some areas.

One major new feature to look out for in the 2024 model is the re-introduction of second-generation GLC AMG models, particularly the 63 S E Performance, which boasts an impressive hybrid-juiced turbo-four engine capable of producing 671 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, there are new high-performance GLC 43 variants available for both SUV and coupe models.

When it comes to the interior and technology features, the GLC-Class impresses with its high-end materials, 11.9-inch touchscreen, and 12.3-inch instrument screen. The customizable ambient lighting adds to the overall luxurious feel, but some users may find the touch-sensitive controls cheap and imprecise.

In terms of cargo space, the GLC-Class offers a much larger area than its predecessors, providing up to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats down. While passenger space has seen improvements, the front seating area remains tight, which could be an issue for taller drivers.

As for fuel economy and performance, the GLC 300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid assist motor, delivering 258 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the AMG GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance models offer even more power for those seeking a high-performance driving experience.

Overall, the GLC-Class offers a blend of luxury, performance, and advanced technology but leaves room for improvement in key areas. Despite its shortcomings, it remains a compelling choice in the compact luxury SUV segment.
