The 2025 BMW M5: New Improvements in Size, Power, and Electric Capability – Except It’s Not an EV

BMW has taken the latest 5 Series to the next level with the introduction of the 2025 BMW M5. This iconic range-topper now boasts 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque thanks to an electrified M-Hybrid plug-in hybrid powertrain. Yes, you heard it right – the midsize bruiser from BMW now comes packed with a substantial battery for enhanced performance.

The heart of the M5’s power lies in the S68 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine that churns out 577 horsepower, with the rest coming from the integrated electric motor within the eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is now a standard feature on all M5 models, allowing for a blistering 0-to-60 sprint in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s package. The V8 engine delivers peak torque at 1,800 RPM and maintains it until 5,400 RPM, with peak power just before 6,500 RPM. BMW has equipped the V8’s exhaust with continuously variable flaps for real-time adjustment of the exhaust note.

In terms of its electrified capabilities, the M5 comes with a 14.8-KWh (usable) battery that provides an electric range of approximately 25 miles and can charge at up to 7.4 kilowatts – making it ideal for a level 2 home setup. However, this electrified enhancement does come at a cost, quite literally. The new M5 weighs in at a hefty 5,390 pounds, a thousand pounds more than its predecessor. But fret not, as this weight increase is a trend seen across the automotive industry, with competitors like Porsche and Audi also producing heavier performance vehicles that still deliver remarkable performance.

BMW has embraced the PHEV angle with the M5 by introducing a new “Boost Control” feature that unleashes maximum power for quick acceleration bursts. Similar to the Powershot feature in the Dodge Hornet, the Boost Control function is activated by holding down the left-hand shift paddle for more than one second and then hitting the accelerator.

Despite its weight, the M5 is designed for track performance. It features M-specific suspension hardware and calibration, along with M-specific adaptive dampers and lightweight suspension components. The M5 rides on serious rubber with 285/40ZR20 tires in the front and 295/35ZR21 tires in the rear, providing optimal grip. Braking power is delivered by six-piston fixed front calipers and single-piston floating rear calipers.

The interior of the 2025 BMW M5 is a blend of new and familiar elements. While much of the interior design can be seen in the i5 and standard 5 Series, the M5 features unique M-specific components such as the wheel, console, and control panel. Various packages are available for further customization and visual flair.

Starting at $120,675 (including destination charges), the 2025 BMW M5 is set to hit the market this fall, offering automotive enthusiasts a blend of power, luxury, and advanced technology in one impressive package.
