Sega is developing a new open-world ‘Crazy Taxi’ game featuring multiplayer mode

Sega has officially announced that they are hard at work on the latest installment of the Crazy Taxi series, and new information about the game is gradually surfacing. The upcoming game will retain the classic taxi-driving concept but will feature a vast open-world environment described as “massive” along with a multiplayer mode for added excitement.

Rather than simply remastering one of the original games from the late 90s or early 2000s, Sega is focusing on capturing the essence of the original Crazy Taxi and adapting it for the gaming landscape of the 2020s. With advancements in both automotive technology and video game design over the past two decades, it is clear that a fresh approach is necessary to appeal to contemporary audiences.

According to a video released in Japan, the new Crazy Taxi has been likened to Mario Kart’s Battle Mode, introducing a competitive element beyond racing against the clock. This modern take on the classic game blends elements of the original Crazy Taxi with a touch of Grand Theft Auto, offering a thrilling gameplay experience with less violence.

Preview footage from 2023 showcases the high-speed action of the upcoming Crazy Taxi game, reminiscent of the demo version played on the Dreamcast years ago but packed with new features. Players can now accumulate a “wanted” level akin to Grand Theft Auto, leading to intense pursuits involving police driving exotic cars. Exciting additions such as drifting mechanics for speed boosts and the potential to play as a cop add depth to the gameplay.

With a familiar cityscape resembling San Francisco as the backdrop, players can expect iconic features like steep hills for jumps, sandy beaches for drifting, and bridges for strategic maneuvers in the new Crazy Taxi. The game promises an exhilarating driving experience set in a vibrant urban environment.

While the official release date for the next Crazy Taxi has yet to be announced, fans can anticipate more updates and details in the coming months as Sega continues to develop this exciting reboot of the beloved franchise.
