Recall Issued for Faulty Charging Control Units in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis Electric Vehicles

Hyundai Motor America and Kia America have issued a recall affecting a total of 147,100 U.S. vehicles due to a faulty charging unit, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently. Hyundai’s recall impacts 98,878 vehicles, including select 2022-2024 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 Electrified, and Genesis GV80 Electrified models. On the other hand, Kia is recalling 48,232 vehicles, specifically certain EV6 models.

The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) is at risk of being damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling, leading to potential issues with charging the 12-volt battery. This can ultimately result in a loss of drive power, thereby increasing the likelihood of a crash, according to the safety regulator’s findings. Kia has outlined specific warning signs that may include warning lights such as “Check Electric Vehicle System,” Master warning light, Charging system warning light, “Stop vehicle and check power supply” warning light, power down (turtle) warning light, and/or decreases in motive power.

To address this issue, dealers will conduct inspections and replace the ICCU and its fuse as needed. Additionally, dealers will update the ICCU software to ensure proper functionality and safety standards are met.

It is important for owners of the affected vehicles to heed this recall information and promptly schedule a visit to their authorized dealerships for the necessary repairs and updates. Your safety on the road is paramount, and taking swift action in response to recalls is crucial to maintaining the optimal performance and reliability of your vehicle.
