According to Mercedes-Benz board member Renata Jungo Brüngger, the counterfeiting industry operates with high profit margins, ties to organized crime, and a disregard for safety, environmental, and ethical standards. Tracking down counterfeit operations is a challenging task, requiring meticulous investigations and collaboration with authorities to conduct raids and seize fake parts.
In 2023, authorities carried out over 740 raids globally, resulting in the confiscation of millions of counterfeit parts, including braking system components, wheels, steering parts, and body panels. These seized parts are destroyed to prevent them from entering the market. Despite the crackdown, some counterfeit parts are so convincingly replicated that specialized teams within Mercedes-Benz are needed to verify their authenticity.
