Man Arrested for DUI at Four Times Legal Limit Despite Not Drinking

Auto-brewery syndrome, also known as ABS, is a rare condition that can cause a person’s body to produce alcohol internally, leading to impaired driving abilities without actually consuming alcohol. ABS occurs when fungi in the gastrointestinal tract convert ingested carbohydrates into ethanol, mimicking the effects of alcohol consumption. This can lead to symptoms of intoxication such as impaired coordination and memory loss, even without actual alcohol consumption.

The man in question faced multiple DUI charges before being diagnosed with ABS by medical professionals. Following a strict diet and receiving medical treatment, he was acquitted of the charges. While ABS is rare, recent research suggests that it may be underdiagnosed in others. The potentially dangerous implications of this condition were seen in a case where a woman in New York registered a blood alcohol level of 0.40 during a routine traffic stop, a level that can be fatal. With only a few dozen diagnosed cases worldwide, more awareness and understanding of ABS are necessary in the automotive industry to ensure road safety.
