Indy Autonomous Challenge Unveils Enhanced and Faster Race Car at CES

Autonomous racing is a rapidly evolving field, with the latest advancement being the unveiling of the IAC AV-24 race car at CES 2024. This cutting-edge vehicle is designed for the Indy Autonomous Challenge, a competition that pits colleges and universities against each other in the development and racing of autonomous cars on real racetracks.

The IAC AV-24 represents a significant leap forward from the previous AV-21, offering enhanced capabilities and performance. This next generation of autonomous open-wheel cars will compete at prestigious venues such as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Monza, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with substantial cash prizes on the line.

To participate in this high-stakes competition, teams and universities must develop advanced artificial intelligence “drivers” to pilot the car and compete for victory. The new car platform incorporates state-of-the-art hardware and software systems, including a Luminar 360-degree long-range lidar system, Continental 4D radar sensors, IAC custom drive-by-wire system, Marelli race control and real-time data interface, and improved GPS, among other features. This advanced technology not only enables greater speed and performance but also allows for more flexible use-case applications.

In addition to the hardware upgrades, a new simulation tool has been developed to allow potential entrants to train and test their AI drivers without needing to invest in a physical vehicle, offering expanded opportunities for competitors to refine their systems.

The Indy Autonomous Challenge serves as a catalyst for pushing the boundaries of high-speed automation, driving innovation and fostering advancements in the field. The transfer of knowledge and technology from the racetrack to the road mirrors the traditional motorsports model but delivers cutting-edge advancements in the realm of autonomous driving.

As the automotive industry continues to embrace autonomous technology, events like the Indy Autonomous Challenge play a crucial role in driving progress and shaping the future of automation in high-performance vehicles.
