IIHS revises testing criteria to prioritize pedestrians and rear-seat occupants

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently updated its testing criteria to address key safety concerns, particularly for passengers in the back seat and the rising issue of pedestrian fatalities. With pedestrian deaths at their highest level since the early 1980s, the IIHS has made changes to its testing protocols to enhance overall vehicle safety.

In 2023, the IIHS updated its testing criteria, resulting in a decrease in the number of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award recipients compared to the previous year. However, in 2024, automakers demonstrated their commitment to safety by earning more accolades than in 2023.

The implementation of a tougher side-impact test, requiring a “Good” rating for the Top Safety Pick award, showcases the IIHS’s dedication to pushing automakers to prioritize safety. Furthermore, changes in the pedestrian crash prevention test now mandate an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for nighttime detection and avoidance capabilities, raising the standard for overall vehicle safety.

The inclusion of a third dummy in the IIHS moderate overlap test evaluates vehicle performance with multiple occupants in mind, emphasizing the importance of passenger safety in crash scenarios. The 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ winners span various vehicle categories, showcasing a diverse range of safe and reliable vehicles for consumers to consider.

By upholding stringent safety standards and recognizing automakers for their commitment to vehicle safety, the IIHS continues to drive innovation and improvement in the automotive industry. Consumers can trust IIHS award winners to provide top-notch safety features and technologies, ensuring a secure driving experience for all.
