How Ford EV owners can access Tesla Superchargers and the process involved

Ford EV owners now have the exciting opportunity to utilize Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network thanks to the introduction of a Fast Charging Adapter provided by Tesla. This game-changing adapter, available to Ford EV owners who sign up through Ford.com, allows for seamless access to Tesla’s Superchargers by using FordPass credentials. Each Ford EV owner is eligible to receive one free adapter, with the option to purchase additional adapters for $230 after June 30th.

Given Ford’s impressive sales numbers of over 76,600 EVs last year, including models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, the demand for these adapters is expected to surpass supply initially. Ford is committed to fulfilling requests from all interested Ford EV owners before making additional adapters available for purchase. While the exact number of adapters available was not disclosed, Ford is operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

To access the Tesla Supercharger network with the Tesla-made adapter, Ford owners simply need to locate a Tesla Supercharger using the FordPass App or in-car Charge Assist app, connect the adapter to the Tesla plug, and start charging their vehicle. The seamless integration of billing information and charge costs through the owner’s FordPass account ensures a hassle-free charging experience. It’s important to note that while some older V2 Superchargers may not support Ford EVs, there are still over 15,000 Superchargers available for use.

Having tested the Tesla-made adapter with an F-150 Lightning at a Tesla Supercharger station, Yahoo Finance found the process to be incredibly efficient and smooth. The adapter’s sturdy build quality makes it easy to connect to charge cables, enabling Ford EVs to begin charging as soon as the connection is made.

Looking ahead, Ford plans to integrate Tesla Supercharger location information into popular navigation systems like Apple Maps EV Routing, Google Maps EV Routing, and Ford Connected Built-In Navigation. Additionally, route planning will be available through the in-car Charge Assist app to further streamline the charging experience.

Access to Tesla’s Supercharger network gives Ford a significant advantage over competitors like GM, Hyundai, and Volkswagen in the EV market. Despite recent challenges in EV demand, Ford’s strategic move to collaborate with Tesla demonstrates its commitment to providing a superior charging experience for Ford EV owners.
