Hidden Treasure: Classic 1991 BMW 535i Found in Junkyard

The E34 BMW 5 Series, successor to the popular E28, was a larger, more luxurious model that showcased impressive sales during its years from 1988 to 1995. In the United States, the sedan-only model was available until 1991, with the introduction of the 525i Touring station wagon in 1992.

In 1991, American buyers had the option of the 525i, 535i and M5, which were priced at $34,900, $42,900 and $57,600, respectively. When adjusted for inflation, these prices equate to $79,614, $97,864 and $131,398 in today’s dollars, showing that these cars sold for almost 100 grand in current money.

The 535i was equipped with a 3.4-liter straight-six engine, slightly lower than the claimed displacement, with an output of 208 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. While a five-speed manual transmission was standard, the original owner of this specific 1991 535i opted for the four-speed automatic transmission.

With BMW transitioning from mechanical to electronic odometers during the production period, the odometer reading of this car remains a mystery. Nonetheless, the interior of this 1991 model remains in great condition, suggesting low mileage and regular garage parking. The original owner’s manuals were also found in the glovebox, showcasing the car’s well-preserved history.

The car was tested with antilock brakes on The Devil’s Rollercoaster road and was featured in a commercial that borrowed or licensed an excerpt from the 1987 Yello song, “Call It Love.” All these details provide unique insights into the history and potential usage of this specific 1991 E34 BMW 5 Series.
