Government Allocates $623 Million for Additional 7,500 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations across 22 States

The Biden administration is making it a priority to build a strong electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the nation. This initiative, funded by grants totaling $623 million, aims to boost the infrastructure for 7,500 EV charging ports in 22 states and Puerto Rico.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasizes the importance of this new funding, as it will not only ensure accessibility and reliability for EV chargers but also create job opportunities in charger manufacturing, installation, and maintenance for American workers.

This investment has been made possible through the $7.5 billion infrastructure law passed in 2021, pushing forward President Biden’s vision to establish a national network of 500,000 publicly available chargers by 2030—a key part of his plan to encourage the shift to electric vehicles and reduce emissions.

Significant progress has been made since Biden took office in 2021, as EV sales have more than quadrupled, reaching over 1 million last year. However, nationwide public charging ports currently stand at 168,426—about one-third of the targeted amount. We are accelerating on an upward trajectory to meet the president’s goal, but there is still work to be done.

To achieve President Biden’s target of having EVs make up half of all new car sales by 2030, widespread availability of chargers is crucial. Addressing this goal, the administration has allocated grants to fund community projects that boost EV charging infrastructure in both urban and rural settings. Additionally, significant funding has been directed towards constructing charging stations along highway corridors and creating hydrogen fueling stations for medium- and heavy-duty freight trucks.

The administration’s commitment to expanding the nation’s EV charging network is not only about meeting the goal of having 500,000 chargers but also about creating a greener future for the automotive industry. With the implementation of these charging stations and the increased affordability of EVs, we are steadily moving towards a period when electric vehicles will become cheaper than internal combustion vehicles, further accelerating the adoption of electric mobility in the United States.
