First Drive Review: The 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Takes on a Volcano with Big Power

TENERIFE, Canary Islands – The new 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class has stepped up to the plate with the challenging task of replacing both the C-Class and E-Class coupes while also taking on the role of a convertible. During my time testing the CLE 450 4Matic Cabriolet on the beautiful island of Tenerife, the vehicle proved to be a serene and comfortable way to soak in the surroundings. The performance of the CLE 450 goes above and beyond the expectations of most drivers, offering a driving experience that transcends the ordinary.

For those who desire a more exhilarating driving experience, there’s the 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe. This variant takes the CLE 450’s 375-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine and ramps up the output to 443 hp and 413 pound-feet of torque. With an overboost function allowing torque to peak at 443 lb-ft for short bursts, the CLE 53 features an electric auxiliary compressor that kicks in when needed, drawing inspiration from Formula 1 technology. Additionally, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system contributes an extra 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. The standard equipment includes AMG’s nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission and AMG’s 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

In addition to the powertrain enhancements, the AMG CLE 53 boasts a distinctive design with vertical grille slats, a more rounded nose, muscular bulges on the hood, and functional heat extraction vents. The flared fenders accommodate wider wheels and tires, while the track has been widened by 3 inches at the rear and 2.3 inches at the front. When compared to the standard CLE, the AMG variant showcases a more dynamic stance with subtle aerodynamic elements, exuding a tastefully sporty aesthetic.

Inside, the cockpit of the AMG CLE 53 mirrors the standard CLE interior with touches of sportiness such as deep side bolstered sport seats, faux suede upholstery inserts, and vibrant red stitching. The inclusion of a sport steering wheel with a drive mode button for additional sport and track settings rounds off the interior enhancements.

On the road, the AMG CLE 53 delivers a noticeable increase in power, accompanied by a more spirited engine and exhaust note. The handling is sharper, encouraging drivers to push harder through corners while maintaining a balance between performance and comfort. The 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system provides ample traction, ensuring a composed and enjoyable driving experience on both twisty roads and daily commutes.

Although pricing details are yet to be announced, the AMG CLE 53 is expected to be positioned above the CLE 450 4Matic Coupe in terms of cost. Given its performance capabilities, luxury features, and refined interior, the AMG CLE 53 is likely to compete in the price range of the BMW M4. While the BMW M4 may offer superior performance on the track, the AMG CLE 53 stands out with its blend of comfort, luxury, and sophisticated styling.

Looking ahead, the possible introduction of an AMG CLE 53 convertible remains uncertain, considering the existing body modifications made to enhance performance. However, for drivers seeking a balance between excitement, comfort, and refinement, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe proves to be a compelling and refined option within the touring-focused CLE lineup.
