Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is preparing to build a mass-market vehicle, and is warning workers of an upcoming challenging production ramp-up. Musk announced that the company’s next-generation electric vehicle (EV), set to begin production in 2025, will require engineers to live and sleep on the manufacturing line.
This is not a new experience for Tesla workers, who have previously had to sleep on factory floors to meet production deadlines. Musk himself has admitted to spending “three years straight” essentially living in Tesla’s manufacturing facilities, including sleeping beneath his desk.
The upcoming production will take place at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory, where Musk hopes to apply new revolutionary manufacturing technology. This production will be very demanding on the workers, as “production hell,” a term Musk coined during the 2017 Model 3 ramp-up, may be revisited.
This move is part of Elon Musk’s long-held plan to release a more affordable EV. The company has been under pressure from Chinese EV manufacturers prioritizing affordable vehicles, which is reflected in their recent position as the world’s largest producer of electric vehicles. Tesla, however, has yet to comment on these developments.
