Chevrolet’s new-generation 2021 Tahoe and 2021 Suburban now offer a diesel engine option, a first since 1999 for these full-size SUVs. Although the Z71 trim is not compatible with the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax diesel due to front fascia design, the diesel option is available on every other trim. The upgraded diesel engine includes improvements such as a revised turbo compressor, retuned air induction system, and higher-flow fuel injectors, resulting in increased output of 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. Engineers and designers have reworked packaging of components in the front end and installed a skid plate specifically for the off-road-focused Z71, making the diesel option compatible with this trim.
On-road and off-road, the diesel engine offers impressive performance, delivering 460 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm. Additionally, the diesel provides excellent fuel economy, with EPA ratings of 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined on four-wheel-drive models, making it a compelling option for SUV buyers looking for both power and efficiency.
