CarMax reveals the top two-door used cars favored by Americans

While two-door cars may not be as popular as they once were, there is still a market for them in the United States. According to recent sales data from CarMax, coupes account for 8% of overall sales, with a significant decrease in sales since 2007. Back then, 25% of CarMax’s sales were from two-door models, including vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500. Now, the top ten best-selling two-door models include familiar names like the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Honda Civic.

It’s important to note that this data is based on used vehicle sales from 249 stores across the country, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. CarMax adjusts its inventory based on customer demand, which may influence the popularity of certain models over others. Two-door sales at CarMax dipped between 2011 and 2020 but have seen a slight uptick since then.

In the broader automotive market, cars are becoming less popular compared to SUVs and pickup trucks. Cox Automotive data shows that cars make up less than 20% of new vehicle sales. The shift away from smaller, more agile cars is partly due to rising costs, making it difficult for consumers to justify owning a less practical second vehicle. Many of today’s two-door cars come from premium brands, further limiting their accessibility to the general public.
