BMW X2 passes Insurance Institute’s safety tests after redesign

The newly redesigned 2024 BMW X2 sport utility vehicle boasts a tougher appearance and incorporates advanced technology, making it a standout in the automotive market. Recently released with a starting MSRP of $42,995 including destination charges, the X2 has secured the prestigious Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The IIHS evaluates vehicle safety based on crashworthiness and crash avoidance, ranking performance as poor, marginal, acceptable, or good. To qualify for the Top Safety Pick designation, a vehicle must achieve good ratings in two frontal crash tests, a side impact test, have headlights that rank as acceptable or good, and offer a forward collision avoidance system with an acceptable or good rating in a pedestrian detection test. The BMW X2 exceeded expectations by earning top marks in each evaluation.

While the X2 has not yet been assessed for the Top Safety Pick+ award due to an upcoming moderate overlap test with a dummy in the seat behind the driver, it is already making waves in the automotive industry. This SUV, often dubbed as a “baby X4,” has gained size and weight, distinguishing itself from its predecessor by approximately 300 pounds. The X2 is available in two variants – the xDrive28i and the M35i xDrive. The former is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the M Performance model increases power output to 309 hp. Both models come with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a built-in limited-slip differential.

Moreover, the new X2 is assembled in Germany and serves as the foundation for Mini’s latest Countryman four-door model. This partnership showcases the versatility and adaptability of the X2 platform, further solidifying its position as a top contender in the automotive market.
