BMW to remove ‘i’ designation from gas-powered models

Enthusiasts in the automotive industry have a keen eye for detail, especially when it comes to the naming conventions of vehicles. Recently, BMW announced the introduction of a new X3 trim called the X3 M50, raising questions about the absence of the familiar “i” designation typically found in their gasoline-powered models. This omission sparked curiosity among fans, wondering where the “i” had gone and what it meant for future BMW models.

In response to these inquiries, Bernd Körber, BMW’s Senior Vice President of brand and product management, shed light on the decision, stating that the company wanted to preserve the “i” designation as a symbol of their electric vehicles. As a result, future models will see a shift in naming conventions, with the “i” likely positioned at the beginning of model names rather than at the end.

The legacy of the “i” designation dates back over 50 years, originating from BMW’s M30B30 engine with mechanical fuel injection technology. This historical reference underscores the significance of the “i” in BMW’s trim names and its evolution over time.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, nomenclature changes become inevitable, reflecting advancements in technology and shifting consumer preferences. Brands like Mercedes-Benz are introducing new naming conventions to align with changes in engine configurations and power outputs, mirroring the broader trend in the industry.

Moving forward, brands like Mercedes and Audi are reevaluating their naming strategies to adapt to the changing landscape of the automotive market. The transition to electric vehicles and alternative powertrains necessitates a reexamination of traditional naming practices, setting the stage for a new era of innovation and sophistication in the automotive industry.
