Bentley’s Ultra Performance Hybrid Outperforms the 6.0-liter W12

The iconic twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine that has been the heart and soul of Bentley Continental GT will soon bid its farewell in the Bentley Batur Convertible, boasting an impressive output of 739 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. However, the spotlight now shifts to the upcoming successor, the Ultra Performance Hybrid. This new powerplant, set to debut this summer, is a V8 PHEV with a combined output of “more than 750 PS” and an impressive all-electric range of 50 miles on the WLTP cycle.

Although specific details such as displacement remain undisclosed by Bentley, industry experts speculate that the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 PHEV from within the Volkswagen Group could be a likely candidate for this new hybrid powertrain. With the promise of delivering “the highest output ever offered in a Bentley,” there is anticipation for a power output closer to 800 hp rather than just 750 hp. Comparatively, the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid produces 670 hp, the Urus SE offers 800 hp, both housing a 25.9-kWh battery.

The integration of e-motors in the Ultra Performance Hybrid will not only enhance efficiency but also distribute torque more effectively across a wider range compared to the non-hybrid W12 engine. A preview sound clip released by Bentley confirms that the new powerplant retains the signature Bentley engine sound, showcasing a memorable blend of purr and growl.

Scheduled to lead the Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur lineup, the Ultra Performance Hybrid is poised to redefine performance standards within the Bentley range by the end of summer. As we approach the launch window, more information about the fate of other engines in the lineup, such as the twin-turbo 4.0-liter non-hybrid V8 and the plug-in hybrid V6 variants, promises to be revealed.
