The foundation of Ariel’s vehicles is centered on achieving a balance between lightweight construction and high-speed performance. Electric vehicles inherently have the capability for speed, but maintaining a lightweight design can pose challenges. However, with the introduction of the Ariel E-Nomad concept, the company has successfully transitioned its compact off-roader to electric power while retaining its signature lightweight nature and impressive performance.
Despite a slight increase in weight compared to its gas-powered counterpart, the E-Nomad still maintains a curb weight of under a ton at 1,975 pounds. Powered by a liquid-cooled Borg Warner motor generating 281 horsepower, the E-Nomad delivers approximately 20 more horsepower than the base Nomad 2’s Ford engine, along with an additional 80 pound-feet of torque at 361. The motor and gearbox package, supplied by Cascadia Motion, collectively weigh 203 pounds. With the enhanced power output, the E-Nomad achieves a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds, matching the performance of the Nomad 2.
The E-Nomad features a battery pack engineered by Rockfort Engineering, boasting a 450-volt configuration with 41-kWh capacity. Equipped with a dedicated heating and cooling system for optimal battery performance and durability, the 661-pound battery pack is positioned behind the driver and passenger. Ariel claims a commendable range of 150 miles on a single charge, with the ability to recharge from 20% to 80% state of charge in just 25 minutes utilizing its DC fast charging system.
To further enhance the E-Nomad’s range, the vehicle incorporates body panels crafted from flax fibers, a innovation developed by Bamd Composites. These panels, which weigh 9% less than equivalent carbon fiber panels, result in a 30% reduction in drag compared to the Nomad 2. Additionally, they are manufactured with 73% fewer carbon dioxide emissions and are recyclable, aligning with Ariel’s commitment to sustainable practices.
While the Ariel E-Nomad currently exists as a concept, the company is assessing public interest in the vehicle to determine its potential for production. The innovative design and performance of the E-Nomad have garnered excitement, and enthusiasts eagerly await the possibility of experiencing this electric off-roader on the road.
