Tesla Inc. has announced an increase in pay for its U.S. factory workers, with all U.S. production associates, material handlers, and quality inspectors receiving a “market adjustment pay increase” at the beginning of the new year. This move follows similar pay raises by other nonunion automakers like Toyota, Volkswagen, and Hyundai. The United Auto Workers (UAW) has been successful in securing labor contracts with major companies, and is now focusing on an organizing drive targeting Tesla and a dozen other manufacturers.
While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been critical of the UAW and unions in general, the push for higher pay for production workers adds another layer of complexity as the company seeks to navigate the challenges of cost-cutting and market affordability for its electric vehicles. The company has more than 140,000 employees globally, with roughly half in the U.S. and over 20,000 working at the Tesla factory in Fremont.
The UAW’s organizing efforts at the factory have faced challenges in the past, with the National Labor Relations Board ruling that Tesla violated labor laws during prior organizing attempts. Despite this, employees at the Fremont plant have formed a UAW organizing committee, and the union has committed to supporting the campaign.
