As a seasoned luggage test czar, one of the highlights of my career has been fitting six bags into the trunk of a Ford Mustang coupe. It was a challenging endeavor that resulted in somewhat squished bags and a few minor hand injuries, but it was certainly a rewarding accomplishment for both the Mustang and myself.
However, with the arrival of the new Mustang, it was time to put the trunk to the test again. On paper, the new Mustang Coupe’s trunk appeared to be smaller at 13.3 cubic-feet compared to its predecessor’s 13.5 cubic-feet. Despite the decrease in volume, it’s still quite impressive for a coupe, outdoing many luxury sedans in the segment.
I noted that the trunk opening, while sizable, had an unusual and slightly restrictive shape. This contributed to the unique challenge of optimizing the trunk space for the luggage test.
Using a variety of luggage including roller suitcases, carry-on bags, and an overnight bag, a familiar Tetris-style packing strategy was employed to maximize space. However, the slightly altered trunk design of the new Mustang meant that the previous formation didn’t quite pan out as expected. It presented a new challenge that required several attempts and creative positioning to make the luggage fit. Eventually, all the bags fit into the trunk, though not without some significant squishing.
Despite the tight fit, I emphasized that the Mustang’s cargo capabilities were impressive and a testament to its versatility. While the space was a bit constrained, it was clear that a small modification in size would have allowed all the luggage to fit comfortably. Overall, it was a feat that highlighted the Mustang’s practicality while maintaining its sporty character.
