The Volkswagen Group has recently announced that several of its brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors, will make the switch to Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port in the North American region by 2025. This means that vehicles from these manufacturers will be equipped with the NACS port, allowing them to charge on Tesla Superchargers. However, smaller brands like Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti were not included in this announcement.
The shift from the Combined Charging System port to NACS has been embraced by most major automakers that sell EVs, establishing it as the future quasi-standard. Volkswagen is also looking into adapter solutions for electric vehicles on the road today and those that will be sold before 2025.
Rebecca Tinucci, Teslas’s senior director of charging, expressed that the VW Group’s commitment is a significant step towards improving charging experiences for all EV drivers. This move will provide owners of certain VW Group EVs access to over 15,000 Superchargers, and Scout Motors has plans to design its new vehicles with the NACS port from the beginning.
As the automotive industry continues to transition towards sustainable energy, the adoption of the NACS port by major manufacturers is a crucial step.
