The 2024 Dakar Rally is gearing up to be a thrilling event, with 199 starters set to compete in six main categories: Ultimate, Stock, Challenger, SSV, and Trucks. Ford Performance will be entering the race with a re-engineered version of the previous-generation Ranger in the Ultimate class, marking the beginning of a learning effort and preparation for a full-scale assault in 2025 with a specially prepped Ranger Raptor.
Polaris, on the other hand, is making significant waves with its entry into the SSV class, debuting its RZR Pro R Factory rigs campaigned by race partner Sebastien Loeb Racing (SLR). The RZR Pro R Factory, which was launched earlier this year, has already proven its capabilities by winning the Pro UTV Open class at the San Felipe 250, Baja 400, Baja 500, and Baja 1000, and securing the SCORE Pro UTV Open Class Championship in its debut season.
The Dakar Rally is known for its grueling conditions, covering a total of 4,903 miles, with timed stages totaling 2,937 miles. Competitors must be prepared to fix their own vehicles during some stages, often with only a couple of hours to do so. Polaris has made specific modifications to the RZR Pro R Factory to ensure it meets the race regulations and demands, including adding weight to meet the minimum, building an enclosed cab with essential features, improving visibility, and adding storage for tools and spare parts.
With the addition of the SSV category to the Dakar Rally in 2017, Polaris is positioning itself for success by partnering with Sebastien Loeb’s race team and fielding seven RZR Pro R Factory rigs for the race. This move underscores Polaris’ commitment to reclaiming the top spot in the SSV category, which has been dominated by other manufacturers in recent years.
