Despite the challenges associated with AI systems, Volkswagen is pushing the boundaries with its new ChatGPT integration. Initially introduced in European markets, this feature is now making its way to VW’s American lineup.
Set to launch on September 6, the 2025 Jetta, Jetta GLI, and the 2024 ID.4 models with the 82-kWh battery pack will be the first to incorporate this AI integration. Other ID.4 owners can expect access later this year. The majority of 2025 Volkswagen vehicles will eventually be equipped with this feature, including the Taos, Golf GTI, Golf R, ID. Buzz, and Tiguan. To access these capabilities, owners will need to subscribe to Plus Speech with AI, with a three-year free trial offered for the two ID models and a one-year trial for select others. Jetta and Taos owners will need to purchase the subscription upfront.
Powered by Cerence Chat Pro, this system enables users to control navigation, adjust infotainment settings, manage climate control, and pose general knowledge questions. While users must initiate the system with “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen,” other commands can be given more conversationally – for example, requesting to turn up the heat when feeling chilly. If a query cannot be handled locally, the system connects to a cloud server where Cerence Chat Pro processes the request and provides a response.
While the concept of being even more connected to our vehicles may seem overwhelming, it’s worth noting that VW’s AI integration will not access vehicle data. This means that there’s no need to worry about a robotic entity monitoring your driving habits. The question remains, however, as to whether we truly need this heightened level of connectivity with our vehicles.
