Toyota develops prototype hydrogen-powered pizza oven

The automotive industry has taken a unique approach to the age-old charcoal versus propane debate with the creation of hydrogen-powered cooking appliances. Toyota, in partnership with Rinnai, has developed the world’s first hydrogen-powered stone oven and a small hydrogen-burning barbecue. This innovative technology is a result of Toyota’s expertise in hydrogen-powered vehicles and Rinnai’s experience in manufacturing safe and reliable ovens and furnaces.

The hydrogen-powered stone oven utilizes technology inspired by Toyota’s Mirai, employing a hydrogen supply and monitoring system similar to what is found in their vehicles. The oven also incorporates Rinnai’s control system for efficient and safe operation. When hydrogen combines with oxygen during combustion, it produces steam, resulting in a unique cooking experience. The oven resembles a traditional pizza oven with a dome, chimney, and a slot for the pizza. Its mobility on wheels allows for easy transport.

Toyota’s hydrogen cooking appliances promise a better taste experience, especially for ingredients like mushrooms and vegetables that typically dry out on conventional barbecues. The brand believes that integrating hydrogen into everyday cooking can help pave the way for a hydrogen-powered society. Employees at Toyota have been testing the appliances by preparing pizzas and pastries, showcasing the versatility and efficiency of hydrogen cooking.

While there is no confirmation of the hydrogen-powered stone oven’s commercial availability, Toyota has already introduced the hydrogen-burning barbecue at motorsport events like the WRC Rally Challenge. This initiative not only showcases the unique technology but also aligns with Toyota’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry. Stay tuned for updates on the future of hydrogen cooking appliances from Toyota and Rinnai.
