Once Volvo successfully launched the XC90 from the assembly lines at the South Carolina plant, the future of the S60 sedan was in question. Following this development, an Instagram post by volvo.forlife revealed that the production of the S60 would cease with the start of production of the XC90 at the Charleston plant. Volvo confirmed this news by stating that the S60 sedan production in Ridgeville, South Carolina would end in June 2024 for the U.S. and other markets, allowing the company to shift its focus to the all-new XC90.
The temporary increase in S60 sales, up by 255% this year, could be attributed to the excitement surrounding the arrival of the XC90. The delay in XC90 production might have played a role in extending the lifespan of the S60.
While the S60 production at the Chengdu, China plant will continue, those units will not be available in the U.S. The South Carolina plant will now prioritize the production of the Volvo XC90 and the upcoming Polestar 3.
Although the S60 has not undergone significant changes since its third generation launch in 2019, it continues to be praised for its stylish design, luxurious interior, and advanced technology. The T8 Inscription trim will be discontinued, but the S60 still offers three trims priced between $45,000 and $53,000 before additional options. These models are equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mild hybrid engine producing 247 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations and capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.
