Mitsubishi Contemplates Naming their Version of the Nissan Leaf “Lancer Sportback”

Recent reports suggest that Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 plan, a new initiative aimed at introducing new powertrains, vehicles, dealerships, and technologies to enhance the overall shopping and ownership experience, is starting to take shape. Mitsubishi North America President and CEO Mark Chaffin emphasized the company’s commitment to making the automotive experience faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Exciting hints of Mitsubishi’s upcoming products include a rugged plug-in hybrid van, a vehicle in the Subaru Outback segment, and a potential electric pickup truck. Additionally, after the introduction of the new-generation Leaf EV by alliance partner Nissan for the 2026 model year, Mitsubishi is set to utilize the Leaf platform for its own electric vehicle. Speculations from Australian outlet Which Car? and Car and Driver point to a potential EV from Mitsubishi named the Lancer Sportback, based on a recent trademark renewal by the company at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Notably, Mitsubishi has also applied to trademark the names Lancer and Lancer Evolution, showcasing a potential revival of these iconic monikers. The company’s strategy of reusing well-known names from its history, such as Airtrek, Colt, Eclipse, and Eclipse Cross, hints at a strong brand continuity and recognition among consumers.

Moreover, Mitsubishi’s recent trademark approval for the Montero name raises anticipation for a potential comeback of the iconic 4×4 SUV that was known as the Pajero in other markets. With the Montero last sold in the U.S. in 2006 and the Pajero production discontinued in 2021, the approval of the Montero trademark signifies a possible revival of this beloved SUV in Mitsubishi’s lineup.

As the automotive industry eagerly awaits Mitsubishi’s new offerings, the upcoming introduction of a small PHEV crossover to replace the Mirage and the anticipated launch of a mini Nissan Ariya-based Leaf are driving excitement among enthusiasts. The image from the Momentum 2030 announcement hints at a new crossover with innovative features and a distinctive design, further solidifying Mitsubishi’s commitment to cutting-edge technology and customer-centric vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates as Mitsubishi continues to pave the way for a new era of automotive excellence.
